Oral Cancer

Oral Cancer Warning Signs
Cancers of the lip and oral cavity rank as the 16th most common overall—11th in men and 18th in women. Early detection greatly improves treatment success. Oral cancer can develop on the tongue, gums, lips, cheeks, and other mouth regions, often appearing as persistent sores or lumps that fail to heal. It’s more than twice as prevalent in men than women and typically affects those over 40.

Key Symptoms to Watch For

Knowing the early signs of oral cancer can save lives. Keep an eye out for:

  • Mouth sores that don’t resolve within two weeks
  • Red or white patches on the gums, tongue, or inner cheek
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing food
  • Persistent pain in the mouth or throat
  • Numbness or tingling on the tongue or elsewhere in the mouth
  • Swelling in the jaw or a lump in the neck
  • Discomfort from ill‑fitting dentures

If you notice any of these symptoms, please see your dentist or doctor promptly.

Common Risk Factors

Several lifestyle and environmental factors can increase your risk of oral cancer:

  • Tobacco use (smoking or chewing)
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
  • Sun exposure (particularly for lip cancer)
  • Poor nutrition lacking fresh fruits and vegetables

Risk also rises with age—most cases occur in people over 40. You can help lower your risk by maintaining good oral hygiene, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol. Regular dental check‑ups are also key to catching any warning signs early.
